Church Parlor Room, Painted!

Picture
Thanks so much to the Bread and Liberty volunteers who showed up to paint the First Presbyterian Church's parlor room last weekend.  We put in a total of 51 hours toward the project.  According to our work-trade agreement with the church, this pays off two square dances and a little more than half of another.  Thanks also to the Church for being open to this unconventional payment option.  Because of our combined efforts, we are able to continue to host community square dances, and the church has a newly painted room to entertain in.  Bravo all around!

Lower Columbia TimeBank Website, www.locotimebank.org Now Public!!!!
Our February 11th Square Dance was a huge success.  We were able to raise $818 for the formation of the Lower Columbia Time Bank and there were bunches and bunches of people.  The crowd was enthusiastic and beautifully attired, the decorations created perfect ambiance, and the food was delectable.

Check out this video posted to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDjmo-y4WxA.  Footage was taken by Jay Rasmussen and edited by Joseph Stevenson.
For the help on the Feb 11th Square Dance, Bread and Liberty would like to say a very big and special THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! to:
  • Joseph Stevenson who was an entertaining, charismatic, and lucid caller.
  • Robert Stevens and the Flats and Friends, who rolled up with a huge band and played a variety of heel kicking tunes.
  • The First Presbyterian Church of Astoria for hosting us in their beautiful fellowship hall.
  • The Women's Resource Center, North Coast Food Web, Titanic Lifeboat Academy, and LoCo TimeBank for tabling at the square dance and sharing information about the good work that they do here in the community.
  • Jay Rasmussen who documented the event with photographs and video.
  • And to the veritable army of volunteers who coordinated the decorations, food, tabling, music, work-trade with the church and so on.
_but what is a TimeBank?
The basic concept of a TimeBank is simple: you spend an hour doing something you enjoy for somebody in your community and, then at some point, someone else spends an hour doing something for you.  In this tight economy, TimeBanks offer a creative way for folks to get things done without having the middle-man of currency, or the bureaucracy and taxation that come with its use.

This square dance is an opportunity to learn more about the Lower Columbia TimeBank while enjoying old-timey music, traditional dance, and north coast community.

. . . and what is Bread and Liberty?
Bread and Liberty is a set of community resources for groups in the lower Columbia River region working directly or indirectly to create and preserve:
  • Regional Self-Sufficiency
  • Local Autonomy
  • Healthy Community
We cultivate public spaces appropriate for discussion and implementation of these ideas.  We organize events, mobilize work parties, and send out information about any other local events that may be going on.  If you have a project in mind and would like assistance or publicity, give us a ring.  If it fits within the three principles listed above, we'd love to help in any way we can.

For more information, please don't hesitate to email breadandliberty[at]gmail[dot]com or call 503.298.6709.
_Work-Trade to Use Square Dance Space
In the same spirit as the TimeBanks, we have arranged a work-trade agreement with the First Presbyterian Church to allow us to use their space for the Square Dance.  We will be painting the parlor room adjacent to the  fellowship hall.

Update:  Thanks to the crew that showed up for furniture moving and such on the 27th.  Due to some water damage at the church, painting has been postponed until it is repaired.  We will keep you posted about the new painting work party days.
Lower Columbia TimeBank Fundraiser
Mark your calendars! We are hosting another square dance on Saturday, February 11th, 2012. An optional beginners lesson will begin at 7:30pm, with dancing to follow at 8:00pm.  No experience necessary! Don't worry it's real easy and everyone's quite friendly about it.

The event will be held at the Astoria Arts and Movement Center in the First Presbyterian Church fellowship hall. Entrance is at the corner of 11th and Harrison in Astoria. Joseph Stevenson of Astoria will be calling the dance and the Flats and Friends will be providing music.  Cost for the dance will be $5 with beverages and snacks included. All proceeds will benefit the creation of the Lower Columbia TimeBank (LoCo Time).
